Gorgonzola first saw the light of day near Milan late 9th century. It had to survive Saracen raids, feuding counts and archbishops and papal struggles so not for the faint-hearted. Probably too late for Charles the Bald but I suspect it was a favourite food of Charles the Fat.
I'm in a cheese-experimenting phase, but haven't tried gorgonzola yet. Clearly, I must ;-)
